    Introduction
Captain Smiths’ book, The Generall Historie of Virginia, New England & the Summer Isles (1624); has been the basis for historical discussions on the same. Smith sailed from England to America and in the book; he gives a documented personal account of the lives and times. He was one of the leaders of Virginia Company, registered in London that was given a swathe to govern Virginia lands by King James I of England.

    Virginia
The name was therefore borrowed from the colonizing company. Despite the fact that there were Native American tribes when the ship carrying Smith and friends docked in 1607, it was named Virginia land symbolizing territorial ownership. A war broke out between the groups which led to Smith being wounded. He had therefore to travel back to England for treatment in October 1609. It was relationship with a daughter of the chief of one of the native tribes that helped save the new sailors from attacks, drought and famine.

    New England
During the time of his absence, Smiths’ account was never taken in good faith by fellow directors of Virginia Company. When he sailed back in 1614 to the Maine coast and bay of Massachusetts, he named the area New England. It was his ability to connect with others that easily endeared him to this new region. This was despite the fact that he had initially sailed to Virginia and established himself there.

    Conclusion
The history of Virginia, New England and Summer Isles is more else a brief account of Captain Smiths’ voyages to America. It however suffices that the region of Virginia and New England were the first to receive civilization from the outside. It was the first to be colonized.
