When I write my essay on spam, I begin by defining the term spam. Spam, in its very nature, is any form of unwanted online communication. Its most popular form is unwelcome email that we receive in our inboxes. The estimated number for spam messages sent in 2010 and 2011 is roughly seven trillion.

When I write my essay, I can discuss the different kinds of spam that a person may receive. As mentioned earlier, the most popular is email spam. However, there is also such a thing as text message spam, instant message spam and social networking spam.

When I write my essay, I can talk about the dangers of spam. Following links sent by spam mail can be part of an identity theft scam where a person’s information (such as a credit card number) is taken against his or her will and used with malicious intent. This sometimes happens without the knowledge of the person whose information is being used.

When I write my essay, I can give tips as to how to deal with spam messages. Email servers (i.e. Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail) usually have a spam filter and will automatically send any suspicious messages to the spam folder of your inbox. Keep in mind though that even though there is a filter in your email, some spam messages still get through your inbox. One way to avoid getting into any scam or malware caused by spam messages is to read through the message carefully. If it is from someone you do not know, delete it. If it is from someone you do know but the content sounds questionable, do not click any links in the message which can lead you to a potentially harmful site. Also, ask the sender if he or she is aware that she is sending such messages. This will help in trying to stop the spam messages from circulating even more.
